About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Bridgewater, NJ, 新泽西老湖南 Fortune Cookies is a distinctive Chinese restaurant that authentically captures the bold and vibrant flavors of Hunan cuisine. For diners seeking a culinary adventure that transcends the standard takeout fare, this local gem delivers with a menu that features fiery, well-crafted dishes bound to ignite your palate.

The hallmark of Fortune Cookies’ menu is their all-day Hot Chili Oil selection, showcasing robust options such as Chicken in Hot Chili Oil, Beef in Hot Chili Oil, and the delicately tender Fish Filet in Hot Chili Oil. These dishes envelope fresh proteins in a perfectly balanced but assertive chili-infused sauce that is richly aromatic and lingeringly spicy, delivering that signature Hunan heat that true fans crave.

Equally enticing is their noodle and rice section, where the Spicy Wontons entice with handmade dumplings swimming in a savory chili oil garlic sauce, garnished with fresh scallions for a crisp contrast. The Wonton Soup offers a comforting broth with tender pork and shrimp-filled wontons, ideal for a lighter yet full-flavored experience. Don't overlook the Steamed Dumplings, which deliver a delicate balance of texture and flavor in every bite.

As the meal winds down, indulge in traditional desserts like the crispy-fried Pumpkin Pie Mochi filled with sweet red bean paste—each piece a warm, comforting nod to authentic family recipes. Or savor the flaky, golden-brown Scallion Pancakes, offering a savory finish to contrast the lingering spiciness of your main dishes.

The dining atmosphere at Fortune Cookies is relaxed yet intimate, providing a welcoming space where the focus truly remains on the food. The restaurant’s somewhat tucked-away location allows guests to escape the busy mall crowds nearby, offering a peaceful enclave for food lovers eager to experience genuine, home-style Chinese cooking. Customer reviews praise the restaurant’s authenticity and flavor depth, with favorites like stir-fried bok choy and shiitake mushrooms, spicy hot and sour soup, and perfectly cooked string beans often highlighted as must-try dishes.

Guests such as Ray D. and Lisa Lian underline the commitment to authenticity, and it’s clear that Fortune Cookies isn’t just another spot on the map—it’s a passionate celebration of Hunan cuisine that delights both adventurous eaters and families alike. The owner’s attentiveness and accommodating nature, especially for those with dietary needs like celiac disease, only heighten the sense of care and authenticity behind every plate served.

This place is great, especially for the adventurous palate. Legit Chinese food, though there is an Americanized version at the rear of the menu. Just had stir fried bok choy and shitaki mushrooms and it was awesome, along with the best hot n sour soup. Definitely a top Chinese food restaurant in the region!

Fortune Cookies is tucked away, far from the hustle and bustle of the nearby mall. Don’t let the exterior fool you—this restaurant serves authentic Chinese food. The string beans (my go-to dish at every Chinese restaurant) were exceptionally well-flavored and cooked. The other dishes my partner ordered were also delicious, but the string beans definitely stood out! They were also kind enough to allow my small service dog to dine with us.

Have been going here with my family for years but only just now came across an opportunity to review! This place is THE BEST CHINESE FOOD AND REAL AUTHENTIC FOOD!!! The owner Leo is great and we have never left disappointed. The steamed flounder is the best I've ever had and I have tried flounder dish at many (more expensive!) restaurants. My sister and I also have celiac disease and they are able to accommodate gluten free diet if you ask - Leo knows (if you are highly sensitive to cross contamination, I would avoid as they cannot guarantee). They have GF soy sauce and can tell you what items are safe. I have never gotten sick. It is very hard to find authentic gluten free chinese food so we really appreciate this restaurant! Everything is always very fresh and we never wait too long. I have recommended the place to many people and will continue coming for years. As other reviews have said, the interior/exterior may deceive you, but authentic chinese food eaters know that many of the best places put their focus on the food, not ambiance. :) 5 stars!!!!!!!

Don’t let the modest exterior fool you; this Chinese restaurant is the real deal. I heard of it from my friends at the Woks of Life, and I can see why that family has this place on their radar. The whole fish with homemade chili sauce was incredible (though not too spicy at all!) and the cold appetizers were the perfect foil. I had jelly noodles and cucumber and both were very good. You know the restaurant is authentic when boiled peanuts and tea come out right off the rip. HIGHLY recommend this place. Other diners’ food also looked and smelled very good. Wish I lived closer so I could try more! If you’re looking for General “Sows,” I’m not sure this is your spot, but if you’re looking for Hunan cuisine straight out of Changsha then give Fortune Cookies a go. Side note: I did not actually receive any fortune cookies after my meal, so set your expectations accordingly.

My family, friends and I have dined here often. The food and customer services are great. We never have any issues. The restaurant has been opened for 15 years for a reason. The food is not your typical American Chinese takeout. Food is authentic here with quality.
